Cloud microphysical measurements at a mountain observatory: comparison between shadowgraph imaging and phase Doppler interferometry

Abstract. The microphysical properties of cloud droplets, such as droplet size distribution and number concentration, were studied. A series field experiments was performed in the summer 2019 at Umweltforschungsstation Schneefernerhaus (UFS), an environmental research station located just below peak Zugspitze mountain German Alps. VisiSize D30 manufactured by Oxford Laser Ltd., which is a shadowgraph imaging instrument, utilized for first time to measure velocity droplets during this campaign. Furthermore, phase Doppler interferometer (PDI) device, Artium Tech. Inc., simultaneously measuring droplets. After applying modifications built-in software algorithms, results from two instruments show reasonable agreement regarding sizing velocimetry diameters larger than 13 µm. Moreover, discrepancies observed concerning concentration results, especially with smaller sizes. Further investigation appropriate filters data allowed attribution phenomena: different optical performance sensors regard small high turbulent fluctuations relative mean flow that result uncertain estimate volume air passing through PDI probe volume.
